West Ham v Leeds United FA Cup quarter final
5th April 2026 at The London Stadium
2025/26 Season
Supporting Leeds United should come with a health warning. Personally, winning the FA Cup again is one of my goals having been privileged to see us win the FA Cup for the only time in our history in 1972. Seeing Billy Bremner lift the FA Cup from Her Majesty the Queen was a magical moment with the feelings out of this world. It was my first visit to Wembley but was memorable with Tommy Steele wearing white supporting Leeds and leading the community singing. Abide with Me and The National Anthem sung by the whole stadium was awe inspiring. Today, was one of the most stressful times of following Leeds as I wanted the win so badly and I’m sure my blood pressure was off the scale. I was shaking that much even with a two-goal lead as I knew that until the final whistle blows that anything can happen. In typical Leeds United fashion, once 11 minutes of injury time was put up on the board, I knew it wouldn’t be easy which proved to be the case, when they scored not one but two goals to equalise and put the tie into extra time. I just knew it would come back to bite those West Ham fans who had given up and were streaming out of the ground. To win the game on penalties though was fantastic and I’m so proud of the lads.
I hope everyone has had a good international break. Although it seems ages since we had a football game, it’s been time to catch my breath and spend time with family. The stress levels have still been high though as yesterday saw the anniversary of my baby daughter’s death and even though it was 35 years ago, I will never forget the trauma of her sudden death from an undiagnosed heart defect. The day was kept busy to help me through though, as my granddaughter’s birthday party was changed for me due to the game now being played on a Sunday.
Today will once again see Leeds fans turning theirs backs to the game on the 26th minute to pay our respects to the families of our lads Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, who were murdered in Istanbul. My own pain mingles in with their pain every year and my heart goes out to them. Tanaka’s goal on 26 minutes was for them and poetic justice.
I am just awaiting details of the winner of the Billy Bremner painting by Robert Endeacott in our online raffle. Once I get the information, I will share that asap.
Thank you to all those who have already bought their tickets for the Billy Bremner Gala dinner on 23rd May. We’ve got a great line up of our ex-players and Jed Stone will be leading the event which promises to be a cracker. I’ve attended many events where Jed has led the line so I’m looking forward to another great event. We have four legends who were part of the team who won the FA Cup in 1972 who will be there, Paul Reaney, Allan ClarkThank you to those Leeds fans who came up to talk to me on Good Friday at the Trafford Centre because as always, wearing my Leeds things including my beret, are always a beacon to others. As I’ve said many times, it doesn’t matter where you go in the world, there is always another Leeds fan not far away. Talk about coincidences though because as I was queuing up to get into the ground today, one of the couples I’d been speaking to were behind me! Just before that I’d bumped into Chris Dawkes and was interviewed with my daughter for ITV Calendar and then we bumped into a friend of ours who was with the police.

Leeds nearly got off to a great start when Okafor saw their keeper make a diving save before Perri was called into action to keep West Ham from scoring. When Tanaka’s goal went into the back of the net, the Leeds fans turned en masse to pay their tributes to Chris and Kev. There was never a better-timed goal, 26 years to the day since their murders. It looked like we might get a second goal when Stach got into the penalty area, but he was brought down and we should have had a penalty. Sadly, he couldn’t continue which was a shame as he’d been playing well. West Ham then saw a header hit the post with Perri beaten. A West Ham fan got irate with us Leeds fans then, not watching the game and shouting where were we before. Well, I’ve supported Leeds for 60 years and was there watching Leeds at Upton Park so there!
The second half saw Leeds take a further lead when Aaronson was brought down in the penalty area. Everyone around me was screaming for a penalty saying it was a definite one. When VAR got involved, the referee went to the screen and agreed. This time when Calvert-Lewin stepped up to take the penalty, we knew he wouldn’t miss this time and he didn’t. Gnonto saw his back heel go narrowly wide which would have put the tie to bed, instead it was West Ham who hit the bar and they put the rebound into the net to pull a goal back. Surely there were two of their players offside though. Their equaliser saw a high kick that nearly took Struijk’s head off as the 11 minutes of injury time came back to haunt us.
Leeds looked to have capitulated in the first minute of extra time when Perri came out to the edge of the box and headed the ball which went behind him and ended up in the back of the net. We were very lucky to see it not given for a narrow offside decision. Leeds were unlucky not to score as a back heel from a West Ham player and then a save by their keeper kept the ball out. Perri made a save with his head as West Ham piled the pressure on us and it really felt that the game would only go one way, and that wasn’t in our favour. They hit the post again and the ball nestled in the corner of the net, but the linesman put his flag up straight away for offside. There was no disputing that one as he was a yard offside. Penalties it was, with Perri making two saves and Leeds scoring four to go through to the semi final at Wembley against Chelsea.
Thankfully with not playing until a week on Monday, it gives our players chance to recover from their injuries, fingers crossed.
