Sunderland v Leeds United
Sunday 25th October 2026 at the Stadium of Light
26/27 Season
With very stormy weather ahead of our journey today, it was a case of stay safe and hope the weather didn’t impact on travel arrangements for our fans. I was glad I was travelling by coach and not driving myself there in these conditions, although on the way there two bad gusts of wind had the coach rocking, but we got to the ground in one piece. I wanted us to get back to winning ways today to give us a psychological boost, but the game didn’t turn out in the way that I hoped. On the way to the ground I received some sad news that one of our Sherburn Whites, Chris Sherburn had died. He travelled with my Selby branch of the Leeds United Supporters Club in the eighties and will always be remembered for bringing sandwiches onto the coach to sell to us all on away games. Rest in Peace Chris and my thoughts are with your family and friends.

From a Leeds perspective that was an awful performance and very frustrating to watch especially in the first half. The shape was all wrong and we let Sunderland dictate the game as we were so slow in our build ups and played deep constantly going backwards. Sunderland had their first chance very early on and Trafford had to stretch to keep the ball out. He was called on again shortly afterwards when it looked like they were going to score having bullied first Wilson off the ball, then Bijol’s pass back was too short. Trafford didn’t dive in and managed to kick the ball away with his feet but that was too close for comfort. We were awarded a thrown in for their player taking too long with theirs but then Trafford started playing mind games by keeping the ball on the floor and then snatching it up at the last minute to throw the ball out to one of our players. I didn’t enjoy this because I felt it would backfire on us as a few times we’d been caught out with bad passes and put under pressure. As it was it really slowed the game down. The referee was giving Sunderland free kicks left, right and centre which can also give confidence to the opposition but then when DCL was brought down in an attack, it was play on unsurprisingly. I was certainly glad to hear the half time whistle blow.
The second half again saw Trafford forced into making a good save as we continued with the same formation. We did have a couple of chances but Gudmundsson’s shot sailed way over the crossbar, then a tame header from Muharemovic made it an easy catch for the Sunderland keeper. Stach made a difference when coming on as a sub and gave us some support in attack. Tanaka shot from the edge of the box and as the keeper parried the ball, DCL tried getting onto the rebound but ended up on the floor. There were shouts for a penalty but having seen it again, I couldn’t make my mind up whether it should have been one. Atwell surpassed himself when two of the Sunderland players collided and he waited for us to win the ball and blew his whistle. To then give them a dropped ball after they received treatment was unbelievable. We should have had a corner not long after that, but the linesman pointed for a goal kick, so we were never going to benefit from a good decision today. We could have sneaked a win in injury time with Longstaff seeing his shot saved by their keeper but then in the last couple of minutes we had two good chances that we didn’t take. That said I don’t think we deserved to win but obviously you’d take it if that happened.
Many fans blamed the windy weather for the way the game was played but I disagree because Sunderland managed to play and many times we made them look good. Yes, we have to take the positive that we got a point and did not get beaten but it felt like an opportunity missed today, as if we only set out to get a draw. We had a few injuries that changed the starting lineup, but I felt we were very unbalanced and lightweight in midfield at the start of the game. It was only at half time that I found out Sunderland were bottom of the table which meant I was even more baffled at the way we played. My coping mechanism is not worrying about other clubs and to concentrate on Leeds only, but at least I will sleep on things tonight, forget about it very quickly and move on to our game at Bournemouth next week. I can always tell when it’s a frustrating game, as a few choice words came out of my mouth with a couple directed at the bad decisions given against us.
As we came out of the ground the wind tunnel under the stand was horrendous but by the time we got down to the coach it was a lot calmer. I wasn’t looking forward to the journey home but luckily, we didn’t have any further issues with the wind so hopefully everyone else got back safely.
See you next week, LUFC, Marching on Together!
