Leeds United v Wrexham
Saturday 25th July 2026 at the Raymond James Stadium, Tampa
Pre-season - 2026/27 Season
Well my savings have taken a battering that’s for sure, but after initially thinking it was going to be too expensive to go to America, I decided that life is for living and to make the most of it. For those who have been following me for a while, they know that my husband Phillip lost his second battle with terminal cancer in October 2024. It was this traumatic time, that made me decide to do things whilst I can and I’m so glad I made the decision to go on the trip. A big thank you goes to Mick Hewitt for organising the trip for a group of 20 to head to the USA on 24th July.
I arrived at the ground early enough for the 9am departure firstly doing a reel and taking photos. I have been asked to trial something so have tried to do a lot of small videos. Hopefully if this is to carry on, there will be a better way to record footage instead of having lots of little ones. Had to go and get a good Yorkshire breakfast at the café opposite the ground before leaving for Stockport International airport.
After a relatively smooth flight of nine hours to Atlanta, we were delayed for a couple of hours there waiting for the storms to subside for our onward travel to Tampa. Eventually we arrived at our hotel the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore at midnight. A lovely choice of hotel with its own outdoor swimming pool. My beret had continued to be admired by many people including the flight attendant from the Atlanta flight. On hearing I was a “famous Leeds fan” by one of the women on our trip, he came to tell me he’d looked me up on the internet. As we got off the flight, he handed me some chocolates saying he was going to look my book up. What a wonderful welcome and gesture which was greatly appreciated.
We missed the organised fan event on the Friday due to not arriving in time, so it was good to arrive at the one in the American Social, Tampa. I’d already met up with one of our old Halifax Whites Dave White (Daisy) who had moved to the USA many years ago and it was good to see him again. I can remember his leaving do but can’t remember the name of the pub it was held in. Thank you to everyone who treated me like a celebrity and it’s very humbling to have such positive feedback for everything I do. Being told I was a fantastic ambassador for Leeds United as well as loving all my appearances on TV was a proud moment so thank you for that. With Tony Dorigo, Jermaine Beckford, Lucas Radebe and Michael Bridges doing a q&a session with fans alongside the Kop Cat making an appearance, a great time was had by everyone. After that our group all went in Ubers to the Miller’s bar not far from where Leeds were due to play Wrexham later that evening. One Uber left but just before ours arrived, the heavens opened and we got drenched trying to get into the car. We stayed in the warmer part of the bar, dried off in there, had something to eat then got an Uber to the ground. I managed to get my flag in rolled up under my arm but one of the lads wasn’t so lucky and his was discarded at the security turnstiles. This was later retrieved by Gary and Kev, and I helped carry it back to our hotel and reunite it with Phil who were all on my trip. Other lads had to put theirs in lockers and get them at the end of the game. I managed to hang mine over the front behind the goal.
First half: Alex Cairns, Ethan Ampadu (captain), Joe Rodon, Sean Longstaff, Daniel James, Joël Piroe, Callum Mills, Willy Gnonto, James Justin, Alfie Cresswell, Jayden Lienou.

Subs not used: Sebastiaan Bornauw, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Tarik Muharemović.
Leeds lost the game 3-2 with Piroe (29) and Longstaff (45) scoring the goals.
Referee: Joe Surgan.
The timing of the game was perfect as the sun went behind the stand, so we were shaded. It’s an odd, shaped ground with open air stands and a pirate ship in our end which looked great. It was fantastic meeting so many of our fans today. I got a refillable diet coke which worked out great with it being so warm. Daisy managed to get his inflatable sheep into our stand, and they were flying around the fans but in the second half one of them was sadly confiscated by the security to a lot of boos. They obviously don’t understand here that the fans were only having a bit of fun.
The game itself was what I expected, a training exercise with many of the youngster getting a run out too. We got off to a disastrous start though as Wrexham scored against the run of play (one lad said I had to put that) which made me laugh, to score within 45 seconds. We were awarded a penalty when James was brought down in front of us only for Piroe’s penalty to be saved by their keeper. He made up for it by equalising and Longstaff scored a second for us. We lost five minutes from time when Wrexham made it 3-2 which was a shame. I would have preferred a draw to losing but again I wasn’t expecting too much from this to be honest.
It took a long while to get our uber back from the stadium as it couldn’t pick us up from where we were dropped off. A buggy then gave us a lift over to the bridge where eventually we found our way back. I joined a number in the hotel bar where there was a lively bunch of Leeds fans. The hotel wasn’t appreciative of the singing so when asked to keep the noise down they sang the first verse of kumbaya my lord very quietly which had everyone in stitches. I decided it was time to call it a day then and left them all to it, but they had their last warning not long after so dispersed anyway. It had been a fantastic day though and I was so glad to be here.
