Leeds United v Crystal Palace
Sunday 20th August 2026 at the Elland Road
2026/27 Season
After the Newcastle game on Monday, I had high hopes that we would carry on from where we left off. It became obvious very early in the game today that I had been too optimistic, but you do need to have belief. I got it wrong but at least we got a point and did not lose.
Before the game, I’d been feeling very weepy on what would have been my mum and dad’s 74th wedding anniversary, but the one thing I can guarantee on to cheer me up, is being amongst our fans. Earlier in the week a small metal plaque dropped out of my tea lights that I can’t say I’d seen before. “May you be proud of the work you do, the person you are, and the difference you make”. Sometimes, I just need a reminder that I do make a difference to some people, and I can be proud of what I do so thank you for the support. Some of our fans had come to the game from Massachusetts USA, Greece and Jørn who was with a party of 32 from Denmark. Another of our fans was making his first trip to Elland Road as a birthday present from his daughter after supporting us since 1972. Sorry it wasn’t the best game to watch but great to meet you all.
Team: Trafford, Ampadu, Bogle, Gudmundsson, Tanaka, Stach, Calvert-Lewin, Okafor, Justin, Muharemovic, Elvedi.

Leeds drew the game 0-0.

Booked: Bogle, Tanaka.
As I always make my judgements by what I see at the game, I could see my optimism before the game was not the reality. It became a very frustrating game with the ball not running for us and many times our passing was not good. I felt like our formation needed tweaking to give us a bit more depth in midfield. It’s the first time I can remember seeing a keeper get pulled up for holding on to the ball too long as we were awarded a corner. At times things did work for us but Palace were up for the game and were able to put us under pressure a lot as they skipped around our players and had their own chances. I wasn’t impressed with the referee as a couple of challenges looked bad fouls and he played on.
After half time Palace made changes and immediately put us under pressure. I still felt we needed to bolster our midfield as they were starting to run rings around us and although we were still battling, it wasn’t easy. When it looked like Palace had taken the lead it had been coming, but what a relief for us when it was disallowed for offside after a VAR decision. It was a let off for us, but we couldn’t capitalise on it so had to settle for a draw. The positive is that we got one point and did not get beaten so have to take that. Personally I wouldn’t have taken Tanaka off as he was playing well despite being booked and would have brought Aaronson on as an extra in midfield rather than as a replacement. Bahoya made his debut with a couple of minutes of injury time on the clock, and he was immediately brought down with a foul as a welcome to the Premier League. Not enough time to make a judgement but I liked what I did see of him.
The poisoned chalice of being called up for England meant that DCL did not score today although he did have a couple of chances. A shout out for my friend’s daughter Nia who told Trafford off for wearing too much red and told him he needed to change the colour of his hair bobble. Well he obviously listened to her as today he wore a white hair bobble.
With the international break ahead of us now, we have no Premier League action until 4th October when we head for the early kick off at Arsenal. Before that on Friday 2nd October, I will be going to the Bremner on the Road event at Drax Sports and Social Club, Main Road, Drax, Selby YO8 8PJ starting at 7pm with Glynn Snodin as guest speaker. For those I’ve spoken to and anyone else who would like to join us, tickets are available either behind the bar at Drax, via the QR code or here priced at £15 each. Talking about everything Leeds United, I’m looking forward to catching up with you there.
See you then, LUFC, Marching on Together!
