Bournemouth v Leeds United
31st October 2026 at the Vitality Stadium
26/27 Season
As I left home at 4.45am it was misty but luckily visibility was still quite good but having just arrived home after an 18 hour round trip to Bournemouth, I’ve come home to the same. With it being chilly, I was quite surprised to get to the ground and find glorious sunshine and blue skies. We had a good run down getting to our pub stop before heading to the ground and I’m glad that we didn’t travel yesterday like many of our fans as the traffic was horrendous apparently. That said, I couldn’t even get out of Brighouse yesterday as it was gridlocked so maybe it was a widespread problem.
When I reached the turnstiles, I was mindful of the issues I’d had at Arsenal when my ticket was blocked after trying three times to scan it. Luckily even after a steward told me he’d already let someone in on my ticket, I was escorted into the ground to my seat. At Bournemouth, with a contactless symbol on the left and a scanner on the right, I used the left one by holding my phone to it and thankfully it worked. After hearing from someone who had his ticket blocked at Chelsea after the same issues, I am very concerned. They went to the stewards and the Chelsea ticket office and were still denied entry as someone had tried to get in on it. Well yes, he obviously tried to scan his own ticket without success! Are they trying to tell us that there are duplicate tickets floating around being used? I doubt it very much but if you needed a duplicate ticket in the past you could go to the ticket office as long as you had proof of ID and get sorted. When you need to complete 80% attendance this can impact on it when you are denied entry. Leeds said it was Chelsea’s issue as they gave the tickets out but I’m sorry that’s not good enough for someone denied entry on the day. What safeguards are put in place to ensure fans are able to gain entry if the turnstiles or tickets malfunction? As fans this is something we need assurance over and I will try and pass this on and will let you know if I get a response. At Chelsea, there were no Leeds stewards at that game to assist when Chelsea refused to help and it’s wrong.
After the Sunderland game, I didn’t know what to expect today as I thought we’d go out and win last week but was sadly mistaken. As always, I would make my decisions by what I see on the pitch. I had photos taken of my beret once again in the ground and it was lovely to see Leeds United use this as part of their promotions for the game today on social media. Thank you to the South West Whites for my latest badge for my beret too.
During the week I was invited by the Leeds United Supporters Club to attend a meeting at Elland Road in the Gary Speed Suite with the Premier League, ProRef and VAR. I got actively involved putting my viewpoint across and asking questions. As I was reminded of today by someone else who attended, VAR will look at a close call and make a quick decision. If it takes a long time to decide on a close call, then the goal should stand. It’s a shame they don’t follow their own rules then as it took three minutes to cancel the Leeds United goal today for handball by Calvert-Lewin!

Before the game kicked off, respects were paid to our armed forces and those who had sadly lost their lives due to war, with a minute’s silence and The Last Post played. This was observed impeccably by the whole stadium.
Despite having only a small allocation of tickets for this ground due to the size of it, the Leeds fans were in good voice as the game kicked off. Leeds started off strongly which was good to see and a great move with Bogle, Wilson and Justin saw Calvert-Lewin put the ball into the net. It was only after celebrations and everyone going back to the middle that we realised that VAR had got involved. The ball had ricocheted off their keepers back and hit Calvert-Lewin but there was no way he could get out of the way of the ball. Why it took them three minutes to decide though is beyond me. That was such a letdown as we were on top at that point. Worse was to come though as Leeds continued to try and play out from the back, putting us under severe pressure. Trafford passed the ball straight to one of their players, and his pass to a teammate meant there was no way there were going to miss scoring from that. That mistake has been coming for a while to be honest as we’ve been so close to being caught out so many times already this season. That knocked the stuffing out of us from potentially going a goal up to suddenly losing.
The second half saw Bournemouth have a shot that went wide, but we were finding our passing and crosses were not reaching our players plus not getting any shots on target. When James had a great run down the wing, he had time to take the ball into the penalty area, but his cross went out so the attack fizzled out. I couldn’t see us getting a goal back in the last 30 seconds of injury time but instead Bournemouth split our defence and scored with the last kick of the game to make it 2-0. A disappointing end to the game for us after such a good start.
The game against Spurs next week will be critical for us to get a win and it’s typical they are just starting to play well after a bad run of games. It’s another 12.30pm kick off too so not the best of times, but we need to get back to winning ways and quickly, making home advantage count. Remember Leeds our best form of defence is attack as we showed against Newcastle. Since then we have reverted to playing deep and out from the back putting us under pressure as today showed. I live in hope we can turn things around so..
See you next week, LUFC, Marching on Together!
