Leeds United v Augsburg
Saturday 15th August 2026 at Elland Road
Pre-season - 2026/27 Season
As we headed to Elland Road for our last preseason friendly before the start of the Premier League next week, traffic issues raised their head once again just like going to and from Dublin. It took me 18 minutes to get from home to the M62 then the traffic crawled all the way to the M621 junction before clearing. Luckily, I’d allowed plenty of time to go and pick my daughter Danielle and friend Nikki up but other family members who set off after me, got to Leeds before us. After a trip to the Peacock I got into the ground just as the teams were coming out. Thank you to those fans who I chatted to about our fundraising for the Billy Bremner statue in Raploch, Stirling. It was also nice to meet up with Terry Lord and his son Jack who had travelled to the game from California; although sad to hear of the passing of his own dad two weeks ago and the reason they were here, it was good to know his dad was also in Paris in 1975 and knew of me. Terry himself used to write articles for the Square Ball in the early days of its startup.

Leeds got off to a fantastic start. As I fumbled with my camera trying to turn it back on, the ball was already in the back of the net in front of the South Stand as Stach gave us a lead in the first minute. A long clearance from Trafford down the centre of the pitch was picked up by Calvert-Lewin. Great control by him as he passed the ball to Wilson on the wing, who passed across the box to Aaronson who then fed the ball to Stach on the left-hand side. Stach unleashed a shot that hit the back of the net to great cheers from the Leeds fans. Aaronson was involved in another buildup passing to Justin who then sent a fantastic cross into the penalty area. Calvert-Lewin’s header brought out a great save from the Augsburg keeper. Another long throw from Ampadu, saw the ball bounce up from Calvert-Lewin’s boot to give Muharemovic the perfect opportunity for an overhead kick resulting in our second goal. Maybe we had a bit of luck as Ampadu passed the ball to Justin. His one two with Calvert-Lewin saw Justin get the ball with his left foot which rolled perfectly in his path to put the ball to the side of the advancing keeper to put us three goals up within the first 30 minutes of the game. Wow this was unbelievably easy, but we were playing some great football and looked a strong side.
The second half saw Leeds stay with the same team before making the first changes on 67 minutes. Calvert-Lewin and Aaronson combined well but the flag was raised for offside. Tanaka sent a ball directly down the middle of the pitch to Nmecha who scored to make this a convincing win in our last preseason game.
As next week sees the start of our league campaign with the away game at Nottingham Forest, it would be nice to see us carry on in the same way as today.
See you there, LUFC – Marching on Together!
