Aston Villa v Leeds EPL
Saturday 21st February 2026 at Villa Park
2025/26 Season
Back to league action today with another tough game. It made me start to reminisce about my first ever game at Villa Park in October 1972 which was a League Cup tie. We arrived just after kick-off, were in the open end and saw Leeds get a 1-1 draw. We had no trouble in the ground and although we had to walk through some of their fans on the street corner afterwards, got back on the coach ok. We were stuck in traffic near the ground when suddenly bricks came flying at the coach and I was told to get down on the floor. After what seemed like forever, the bricks stopped flying but all the coach windows down the left-hand side were no longer there with glass everywhere. As far as I can remember, we were the only coach there too so why we were attacked I’ll never know, but it was certainly a baptism I’ll never forget.
On arrival at the ground, we found that we were no longer parking in the car park opposite it but instead, were taken to some sort of industrial park. Talk about potholes, well there were numerous craters full of water and bad muddy conditions with no thoughts given to our disabled fans once again, especially given it was a longer walk. What is going on with the Premier League this season that clubs don’t seem to care about disabled fans travelling to games? After the Everton fiasco, today was very unexpected. It was also a kick in the teeth for all our fans who had to find their coaches there.

Leeds drew the game 1-1 with a wonder strike from Stach’s free kick (31) giving us the lead that had the Leeds fans singing the Klich song for him
Attendance: 43,048, 3,000 Leeds fans
Referee: Michael Oliver
Leeds started off well and had a great attack with Calvert-Lewin seeing their keeper get the better of him to keep the ball out. On the half hour mark Leeds were given a free kick. As Stach lined up to take it, I said to myself that if it is a direct free kick then put it straight into the net. I couldn’t have put it any better because Stach did indeed send a wonder strike into the top left-hand corner of the net. What a goal. Gruev came very close to scoring as Leeds kept on with the counter attacking. Villa had been limited to chances in reality and their shots weren’t on target. The linesman in front of us was having trouble keeping up with play and kept missing their offsides. The one he missed saw them nearly score as we battled to keep the ball out and keep the score still in our favour just before half time break.
The second half saw a change of shape as Gudmundsson was replaced by Bijol. He hadn’t been playing well but I wasn’t sure if it was a tactical decision or whether he was injured. It then took us a while to get going as Villa piled on the pressure. Just as I was saying we needed Farke to change things before they scored, they hit the post and then put the rebound into the net. Was I glad to see the offside flag go up. When Nmecha replaced Aaronson, he was very unlucky not to score as his first touch saw him head the ball at their keeper after another fantastic cross from Bogle. If he’d have headed it the opposite way, we might indeed have scored. Villa won a late corner and as Rodon waited for the ball to arrive and jump, he was knocked over by their player heading it on for them to equalise. That was a disappointment that we couldn’t hold on but in reality, a point was probably a fair result despite the poor performance from the referee. At times, I thought he was going to walk the ball into the net for Villa by giving free kicks from innocuous challenges. The main thing is we played well today, took the lead and didn’t get beat.
It was nice to receive a bun from one of the lads celebrating his 21st birthday so thank you.
As I’ve said previously for those of you who have been following my blogs, please note that you will need to click on the link to my website when they are posted, to see all photos from the matches. I am trying things differently to help cut down the number of hours I spend posting them. It would help of course, if I didn’t always fall asleep whilst doing them!
You can keep up to date with matchday blogs, the Billy Bremner Campaign to get a statue for him in his hometown of Raploch, Stirling. This includes details of the online raffle and the Billy Bremner Gala Dinner where all profits will go towards his statue.
It is still work in progress as the You Tube channel will be updated in due course but for Leeds United supporters, there is still plenty on there to see. Thank you for the support,
Once again, I have had the same person come back onto a social media post I was mentioned in, saying I’m a mental case, there is something wrong with me and have nothing in my life. I did try to have my say but then listened to one of our fans say he wasn’t worth it and I decided to take the advice and ignore him. Sadly, I’ll never please everybody but if they don’t like what I say, do or look like, then why on earth don’t they just scroll by………?
Another tough game to look forward to next week with our home game against Manchester City. Just keep doing what we are and keep battling to the end and you never know what can happen. Not getting beat is the aim, so see you there, LUFC – Marching on Together!
