Arsenal v Leeds United
Saturday 10th October 2026 at the Emirates
2026/27 Season
Before I start my blog today, I just want to say how proud I am of the players and their performance today. We were very unlucky to lose by a narrow margin, but they did give us something to shout about by scoring first so I’ll take that.
At the start of the week I was going to make the most of relaxing in the last week before today’s game, but it didn’t turn out that way. On Tuesday I did a podcast for Micky Kerr called “Who stole the soul of English football” out in November, Wednesday was another podcast with Stephen Byrne from Leeds United – Yorkshire & Beyond and Darren Clarke from Leeds Bros both from Ireland. They’ve done a good job of this and thank you for asking me to take part - Watch here. Thursday saw me have a skin biopsy so I’ve nine stitches in my neck and Friday saw me filming at Elland Road for Premier League Productions. The latter will be posted next week so looking forward to seeing that one then. I’m also doing a Bremner on the Road at the Holbeck Working Men’s Club on Saturday 17th October the day before our game against that team from over the Pennines. It starts at 6pm and entry is £5 with all monies going towards the Billy Bremner statue in his hometown of Raploch, Stirling. If you can come and support this, I would be grateful and I’ll be talking about my 60 years of following Leeds United followed by a Q&A session. Tickets available directly from the club or via this link
I’m so glad the international break is over as I couldn’t watch any of it although I want our players to do well. That said, when my alarm went off at 3am this morning, I wasn’t looking forward to the early start. Luckily I had an easy journey to Leeds plus on the coach to London and we were at our pub stop even before alcohol could be served. I was only waiting for a hot chocolate but after 20 minutes had to go to the bar to get my cup which was a good job as they only brought one when we were getting ready to leave for the ground. As they close the roads around the ground, we had to be there early, so I took the opportunity to walk to our turnstiles, asking a few Arsenal fans for their score predictions. As you can guess I didn’t agree with any of them!
It was a lovely sunny day with plenty of blue sky as I stood chatting to our SLO and DLO outside the ground. We saw Robbie Evans our managing director and his guests coming towards us, so I managed to get a photo with them. I was also very cheeky asking him if he could get me one of the Owl badges he was wearing as I’d not seen it before. I am now the proud owner of that badge on my beret and thank you very much for giving it to me which is appreciated.
As I got to the turnstiles, the fun and games began. Of course, I turned my phone the wrong way and couldn’t get my ticket to scan only for it to say I was blocked! As I went to see the steward outside the turnstile, she told me to go and see another steward to the left. It was only once I had spoken to him and he checked the status of the ticket, that he informed me he’d already let someone in on MY ticket. What????? To be fair he got another steward to take me in through the gates as they wanted to check who was in my seat. As it was empty I said it would be fine and it was. Another lad had a photo taken by a steward as his ticket didn’t click and he wanted to prove he was at the game. It made me wonder if it was more a glitch at the turnstiles. Also it was sad to hear that some fans didn’t get to the game due to their train being terminated for power lines down. The joys of what our fans have to do to follow our team when things don’t go to plan.

I knew it was going to be a tough game, especially after the international break when we tend to not do well and I was going for a 1-1 draw. I’d said not to be overawed like last season and we’d to come and fight. Things looked very positive early on and despite Arsenal trying to put a lot of pressure on us, the players were backing each other up and playing well. We also had started to use the offside trap effectively. Leeds came close with an Okafor shot deflected wide of the goal before Stach had a great shot but unfortunately Bogle got in the way and the ball went out for a goal kick. Gudmundsson saw the keeper save his shot to prevent us taking the lead. It had been a very positive performance from Leeds as we went into the break on level terms. We had more than matched Arsenal and certainly were giving them a game.
The referee was being his usual self when he started booking our players in the first half which continued into the second half. He had initially seemed to try and keep the game flowing although that changed after the break when he kept giving them a free kick for every little challenge. The only time he ignored their player down, he kept play going and they equalised from it which was a typical Sod’s Law moment. Tanaka had a great shot that was tipped over the bar by their keeper. Before Arsenal scoring though, Leeds gave the Leeds fans something to shout about as we took the lead. A great run down the wing by Gudmundsson saw his cross evade everyone in the penalty area and reach Justin at the far side of the goal to slam the ball into the net sending everyone wild. We certainly deserved that goal as we were playing well. Their equaliser saw their player in a lot of space at the right of the goal, but it looked like a mishit shot into the net from in front of goal. They had another chance after that which was luckily a wayward shot off target before some good possession work saw them score the winner from the edge of the box. What I cannot understand is seeing the pitch with slopes down to the hoardings. Surely that’s dangerous?
Despite going down to a 2-1 defeat, I wasn’t downhearted at the end of the game, due to the way we played. Our best form of defence is attack which worked for large parts of the game. To come here and play the way we did shows how far we have come and we didn’t come here to roll over and die like we did last season.
Former player Meslier now with Arsenal, came to clap the Leeds fans at the end of the game and I was glad to see him do that. Personally I would have had him as our reserve keeper rather than buy Perri and I’d have used the money to spend elsewhere in the team. A lot of people remember the mistakes but forget about the saves that do get made that make a difference between a win or a defeat. Even Trafford today was a little too casual at times and once he came right out of the goal, we were lucky that we managed to battle enough to prevent Arsenal from scoring. He did well with a couple of other opportunities though.
As I walked back into the house it was like walking into an oven. I couldn’t understand it as it was still quite mild only to realise the batteries had run out in the thermostat. Thankfully my son-in-law sorted it out for me, so it’s gone back to my normal 17 degrees. Before I end my blog and our thoughts turn to next week’s game, Tuesday sees the second anniversary of the death of my husband Phillip/Captain. As a family, we are all coping well but obviously still get our ups and downs as we still miss him. His death is the big reason why I say life is for living and to make the most of everything you do, which is why I made sure I went to the preseason tours in America and Dublin.
See you next week, LUFC – Marching on Together!
