Leeds United v Brentford
21st March 2026 at Elland Road
2025/26 Season
Well after last week’s referee performance where he didn’t have a clue that he’d already booked Gudmundsson and had to be told to send him off, this week it was the Premier League showing us the game has gone. Being hit with fines of £500,000 for late starts and restarts, it was the statement from them that astounded me. “Rules relating to kick offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard, while providing certainty to fans and participating clubs”. I don’t know how they can keep a straight face because once again tonight, we saw a keeper going down “injured” just after we brought our subs on and weren’t able to restart the game. Ever since Pep got away with it with Man City, it has now become the norm with every opposition club and frankly, it stinks. With the timewasting taken to extremes by Sunderland, how they can claim such a thing is beyond a joke.
I had arranged to meet LUFC Adventures at the Holbeck Club to answer her 10 questions and was to appear on Sky’s Soccer Saturday Fan Zone at 6.45pm as the Leeds United starting XI representative for Fanalysis. I’d been holding on for the latter interview for 10 minutes and listened to the Spurs and Forest fans interviews and was told there would be an interval then I’d be next. I’ve no idea what happened because when they came back on, I could hardly hear anything, so it was a struggle to listen to their questions. I thought I’d messed up, but after the game my sister tagged me in on her recording and I was surprised to see that I could be heard clearly after all.
There was also the poignant remembrance of our two lads murdered in Istanbul, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight before kick-off with Ampadu and the Brentford captain bringing white wreaths onto the pitch with the family and friends of the lads at the side of the pitch. On 26 minutes, Leeds fans en-masse turned their backs to the pitch as our fans did at the game all those years ago as it should never have been played after what happened. Then at half time it was great to see one of our legends Mick Jones being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award including a heritage cap. It was a well deserved honour but I was very disappointed to be the only one singing, “It’s just one of those goals that you never forget, a flick from Mick Jones and the ball’s in the net, it’s one of those goals that you see now and then but the Gelderd End knows that they’ll see it again, na na na na na na na na na na na na na. Then I chanted M I, MIC, MICK, Mick Jones before ending with na na na na na na na, na na na na Mick Jones. Well, he deserved the rendition as far as I was concerned but although there was great applause, he should have had his name ringing out from the terraces too. Mick will also be a guest of honour at our Billy Bremner Gala Dinner in May and a VIP ticket guarantees a photo with all the players on the day.

The first half wasn’t easy to watch as Brentford were a well drilled team and were causing us problems. It looked like a change of tactics would be beneficial because in the final third, we were woeful with passes not reaching our players and Brentford clearing easily. The nearest we came to scoring was when Nmecha saw his long-range shot saved by the keeper just before the break.
The second half saw no changes, but we did come out fighting. Another long-range shot, this time from Ampadu, saw the keeper have an easy save to make as it was straight at him. But with the ball not running kindly and it looking like some nerves from the players were on show, we finally made a change and brought on Tanaka and Okafor. Just as they’d come onto the pitch, that was the cue for their keeper to go down “injured”, I mean play acting. The authorities really need to get a grip on these tactics and reading their manager was one who gave Bielsa grief about having one of his staff on a public footpath in the spy gate incident, leaves a sour taste. Talk about being two faced, practice what you preached came to mind. The fans let their feelings be known on it as we got behind the team but despite all the pressure, we were unable to get that break through goal and had to settle for a point. It feels like we lost two points today but as it was pointed out to me at the end of the game, Brentford have one of the best away records in the league so in reality, maybe a point isn’t so bad after all.
With the international break upon us now, we will face FA Cup action after that with our game at West Ham where once again, I was unsuccessful with trying to get tickets for my family who are members. To say, that before they changed the way tickets were sold, I did quite well with tickets but since then, I’ve had no luck whatsoever. At my recent meet up with the Malta Whites, I was given some scarves from them and was able to give two away today. Thank you for the donation towards our Billy Bremner statue too. I have put in a further order for some more of the blue plaque badges, but there will also be some new Billy Bremner badges coming soon so keep watching for further news. We also have our Silent Auction for the Billy Bremner Gala Dinner now live and for those who want to find out more, see the following link for further details with some great opportunities https://astarauction.com/billybremnergala
Also, congratulations to Craig McAvoy who won the brilliant holiday up north in our Billy Bremner Legend raffle draw. We hope he enjoys the stay!
