Nottingham Forest v Leeds United
Tuesday 25th August 2026 at the City Ground
2nd round Carabao Cup
We headed back to Nottingham for our second game in a few days where I knew our fringe players would get some game time. That said, we put out a strong side, and it was good to see us starting to take the cup games seriously, especially after last season’s FA Cup success until the semi-finals. Winning breeds winning plus it gives players who would normally be sat on the bench, some game time.
I knew my eyesight was deteriorating when on Saturday I was convinced there were plenty of empty seats in the Trent End only to realise it was fans wearing red shirts. Tonight I saw the difference as there definitely were empty seats in their end. It wasn’t just my eyesight getting worse as someone commented that I was losing my voice. I’d been blaming the air con on the USA and Dublin trips together with all the flights, but then realised it was probably more to do with talking to so many fans and singing Leeds songs plus singing along to my music. One mistake I won’t make again is by stopping talking altogether to give my voice a rest. I did that after we’d travelled to Cardiff for the Watford play offs. As we arrived home, I woke up to the most horrendous sore throat and lost my voice. On the doctor’s instructions, I had to stop talking to rest my vocal cords but that was the worst mistake I could have made as I lost it totally for six weeks. I realised how much things can be taken for granted because trying to answer someone and no sound coming out made it a stressful time. I had to write everything down when I wanted to speak to anyone and although my hubby and the kids thought it was great which was quite funny, the fact that it affected my singing voice when it did come back, that will always be a big regret.
As the game kicked off, I started getting messages from some of our Norwegian fans that I had been seen on the TV and send me photos.

Booked: Tanaka, Longstaff, Ampadu.
Although there were less petty fouls at the start of the game than on Saturday, more players were booked. There were a few instances later in the game though where the referee played on when it was definitely a foul and we should have had a free kick.
Once again, we had Trafford to thank for making some great saves to prevent Forest from taking the lead. We were caught out a few times with their players on the wings getting the better of our defence again. When Rodon lost the ball on the right as they ran towards the Leeds fans, he was like a man possessed as he raced into the penalty area to make a fantastic tackle to win the ball back and prevent Forest taking the lead. Justin responded in the same way on the opposite side of the pitch. There was plenty of backing each other up and despite us not having many chances in the first half to score, we were looking good.
The second half saw us take the lead after a great ball from Longstaff to James saw him lift the ball over the keeper to score a great goal. After another great save from Trafford we were straight to the other end where Okafor after some good work, fired his shot wide of the goal. As always now whenever Ampadu takes a long throw into the penalty area, I know it’s going to cause problems and once again we ended up with a goal. Muharemovic headed the ball back across the goal and despite their keeper trying to get the ball away which he missed, their player on the line kept the ball out but between Justin and Nmecha the ball ended up in the back of the net in front of the celebrating Leeds fans. Justin hit the ball, but it touched Nmecha on the way in. Although Justin looked to have claimed the goal, it was credited to Nmecha. It was game over by this time as the Leeds fans in full voice enjoyed beating Forest for the second time.
I was impressed with some of our passing which was sublime, plus the way that our new players Trafford, Muharemovic, Wilson and Elvedi just slotted seamlessly into the side as if they had been there for ages. The bond between the players is great to see but this is also happening with the way they are reacting with the fans. There was a great atmosphere today and plenty of singing “United Are Back” and the looks on our new players faces was as if they couldn’t believe the passion coming from our fans.
I want to also praise the Nottingham Forest stewards today for how they reacted with our fans and looked after us today. There were plenty of young children at the front of the stand and after not being able to see at the end of the game on Saturday due to all the stewards stood in front of us, this was a great response from them. Thank you.
After there being no soap in the ladies’ toilets on Saturday which for the first game of the Premier League season, I found bizarre, this was also remedied today. Before I got into the ground the policeman with the sniffer dog said that he recognised me from Saturday, and my flag was recognised too.
By the time we made it back to Leeds it was my friend Sue’s birthday, the terrible twins as my mum used to call us. It was Sue’s dad who took me to Elland Road for my first game for Sue’s 12th birthday. It’s hard to believe how many years have passed since then, but we are still loyal Leeds fans to this day. I also want to wish a friend of mine Mark who is in hospital and going through a tough time, a speedy recovery and hope to catch up with him again soon.
I’d like to thank Charley from the Harrogate Whites for the donation of a Stach framed picture that will be used towards raising funds for the Billy Bremner statue in Raploch, which is greatly appreciated. It’s hard to believe that Sunday will see our first home game of the Premier League season against Brentford with a 2pm kick off, especially as I’ve already seen so many games with the preseason tours. Straight after the game, I’ll be heading to the Garforth Whites fundraiser for Billy’s statue where Tony Dorigo will be the guest speaker. It will be another great event so looking forward to seeing everyone there.
