Leeds United v Burnley
Friday 1st May 2026 - At Elland Road
2025/26 Season
The defeat at Wembley seemed a far distant memory as I headed to the game with my daughter and granddaughter. What that defeat did though, was make me more nervous about the game tonight whereas before that, I wasn’t worried at all. As they had also sacked their manager before our game it felt things were conspiring against us, especially when they turned us round at kick off so we attacked the Kop in the first half.
Team: Darlow, Ampadu, Struijk, Bijol, Justin, Tanaka, Bogle, Okafor, Calvert-Lewin, Rodon, Stach.
Subs: Nmecha for Okafor (65), Aaronson for Stach (72), Longstaff for Tanaka (72), James for Bogle (90), Gnonto for Calvert-Lewin (90).
Subs not used: Perri, Piroe, Bornauw, Byram.
Leeds won the game 3-1 with goals by Stach (8), Okafor (52), Calvert-Lewin (56).
Attendance: 36,265, approximately 1,500 Burnley fans.
Referee: Thomas Brammall.
Booked: Struijk, Rodon, Calvert-Lewin, Ampadu.
Leeds started strongly and as the ball came back to Bijol, Stach asked for the ball in space. Bijol sent a great ball to him, and he unleashed a long range shot that I thought had gone wide until everyone jumped up in celebration. Just what we needed to settle the nerves, an early goal. That said, we started to play deep and for me, I knew one goal would not be enough to win the game comfortably. Although Burnley didn’t really have any chances in the first half, I felt they would still be a threat.
The second half saw Leeds increase their lead after Calvert-Lewin intercepted the ball, his clever back heel to Bogle saw his perfect lifted pass across the box met by Okafor to make it two. That goal was certainly needed to put a bit of space between the teams. We didn’t stop there as a long throw by Ampadu saw Tanaka’s shot parried by their keeper with Calvert-Lewin the quicker of the players to put the rebound into the net. Elland Road erupted and was bouncing and it felt good to be three up. The only thing was, Burnley decided they still had some fight left in them as we made it harder than it should have been, especially when it looked like they’d pulled one back. The linesman immediately put his flag up, but we had to wait ages for VAR to confirm it was offside. Sadly, it wasn’t long after, that they did put the ball into our net once again and this time it counted. They had started to put pressure on us with fast attacks, so it wasn’t a surprise. We did make some changes then, but I knew I couldn’t rest until the final whistle went after a long eight minutes of injury time was added on. Others may have been a lot more confident than I was tonight, but thankfully we got what we needed tonight to take us above Newcastle and level on points with Palace, even if it’s only for a little while.

We have a break until we play Spurs now so it will be interesting to see how the table looks by the time we play them. In the meantime, I will be on Sky’s Soccer Saturday Fan Zone at 6.30pm so watch out for me. At least thankfully we got the win and three points to put us in a good position going forward.
See you there, LUFC – Marching on Together!
